Smiz The Moneykid

We caught up with New Yorker Smiz The Moneykid whose debut album “Pardon My Back” was produced by Grammy nominated producer Phillip “Bangout” Pitts & Canada’s own super producer John “MaddMann” Barton.

He recorded his latest album “iPhone8” solely on the iPhone. His upcoming album “volksoorlewering” aka “folk lore” was produced by the super producers “YoBroBuild”.

Where are you from?

I was born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn New York but was raised in the Sawyertown section of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

What is The music scene like in area?

New York is vibrant and full of music & art but down south where I'm at there's not much of a music scene at all so you have to be self motivated if you wanna be successful.

How did you come up with your artist name?

My 1st rap name was 100% Fresh, when the word “fresh” went outta style I became 100% after that I became “Percent”, then after a while I adopted the name “Smiz” from my childhood name “Smiley” added on the “Moneykid” made a song called “Introducing Smiz” and the name was solidified.

Away from music can you tell us about another talent that you have?

I am a creative writing major so i enjoy writing poetry plus I have a few book projects in the works with one being an educational colouring book. Outside of contract readings and marketing & promotions, music is pretty much my life. I do this 24/7 365 days a year, all day everyday...that's how its got to be if you wanna make a living as an independent artist.

How often do you gig?

I was averaging about 1 show per month before the pandemic hit but i have new shows

lined up for the new year starting March 2021 so I'm excited!

How would you describe your sound?

I describe my sound as what i like to call “Educated Street Shit”. Real life converted into songs of testimony.

Who inspired you to make music?

Early childhood trips back & forth to New York gave me that early influence of hip hop. I use to record raps from the radio just so I could listen to it down south.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I'm not really one much for envy but if i had to choose an artist to collaborate with it would have to be an artist by the name of Beres Hammond, he’s one of the most prolific writers of our time.

Which of your songs are you most proud of and why?

It would have to be a song off of “iPhone8” entitled “Love Life”. I like the spiritual emotions it evokes with so many losing so many loved one in the world, now seems like the best time to “Love Life”.

Can you describe your creative process?

My creative process is what I like to call “Fresh Outta Heaven” meaning I move off of the spirit, off of the energy I draw from the music and my emotions combined at the time of creativity.

When you're not recording on your iPhone, which DAW do you use?

I was taught engineering and producing on Protools at The Institute Of Audio Research in NYC where I went to school for recording, engineering and producing so I use Protools by default.
